Local Pastor Plants $100 Dollar Bills in Easter Eggs to help Families…
A Parkland area Pastor decided to use an Easter Egg Hunt as a small way for area residents to have a new beginning and hope in these economic tough times. Donald Shorter, Pastor of Pacific Church (Pacific Christian Center) in Tacoma, Washington is inviting those in need of a little help to come to the church’s annual Easter Egg Hunt with their children and have some fun and be encouraged. Noting that he and his wife met for the very first time as elementary school students at an Easter Egg Hunt, and have been married over 35 years, he said this can be a small demonstration of how Easter can be a time for a new beginning. “We just want to instill hope in the hearts of those that may be a little discouraged and let them know that new beginnings are what this season of Jesus’ resurrection is all about”. Pastor Shorter began making an impromptu announcement that he wanted to give a few hundred dollars to put in the Children’s Church annual Easter Egg Hunt”, others began to hear about it and began to bring him hundred dollar bills also to be included in the Easter Egg Hunt. So far he has received several hundred dollar bills with more coming in for the Sunday Egg Hunt. His hope is to have several thousands of dollars for the Egg Hunt next year, and to encourage other congregations to join in with him with their own cash hunt at their churches to help families and instill hope in our communities. “There are a couple of catches to those wanting to be part of the Easter Egg Hunt though; you must be a child, and you must be at the morning service which begins at 11am on Easter to sign up,” Pastor Shorter said with a smile. All the plastic eggs will look similar but some will have $100 bills in them along with the traditional candy treats, also, there is no limit on how many eggs a child can find and keep. “The truth is that we are celebrating the season for new opportunities to start fresh and that everyone has an opportunity for a new beginning on this Easter Sunday, the money is just our way to try to help our neighbors and to emphasis this fact. Maybe this could be the hope someone needs for a new beginning in life,” said Pastor Shorter. Pacific Christian Center is located at 3211 – 112th Street East, Tacoma, WA 98446.

Tacoma, Washington HE’S KNOWN AS THE 3Ps… PASTOR, PREACHER, PILOT…
His congregations affectionately knows him as The Flying Pastor. Donald Shorter, Pastor and Founder of Pacific Christian Center Church now with locations in Tacoma, Renton, Vancouver, Washington and frequent meetings in Bellingham, Yakima, Washington and Eugene, Oregon, simply had to find a way to get there. Shorter said, “The thought came to me that the only way to do what I felt I was to do to cover the northwest and get to each destination across the country and anywhere in the world, was to learn how to fly.” So at the age of 48 the former Seattle Radio and Television personality Donald Shorter, Pastor, Preacher, Pilot picked up a book on aviation at a Borders Book Store in Tacoma, Washington and began to simply read about aviation. A little over 30 books, 3 years of intense study and several FAA grueling tests later, he is certified to over 10 different aircraft and is flying aircraft in instrument conditions more than ever before, as he pilots both helicopters and airplanes, and in the coming few weeks he will add Jet aircraft to his type rating certification list, of which he plans to purchase, along with a Bell Jet Ranger Helicopter, to help him ‘go into all the world’ to preach the gospel. “I took those words literally and felt that this would be one way that I could do just that!” He said. Shorter was inspired to study to become a licensed FAA Commercial - Multi-Engine - Instrument Rated Airplane and Helicopter Pilot after reading about the Tuskeegee Airmen and the challenges they had as “Negro Pilots” desiring to fly and how they excelled, against all odds. The title of his newly written book, being advertised nationwide for release this fall 2007 is “Winning Against All Odds” published by Harrison House Publishers in Tulsa, Oklahoma and includes excerpts of his challenges in learning how to fly at nearly 50 years of age. He acquired a desire to fly at an early age though, while he played shortstop on a little league baseball team on Ft. Lewis, Washington while his dad was in the Army. During the games, watching helicopters make auto-rotations, and airplanes land at the nearby Grey Army Airfield across the highway from the little league baseball field where the youngster was playing ball, he would often be totally distracted. Shorter said, “It literally became my field of dreams… about aviation, not major league baseball. “In 1963 at eight years old I said to myself, I am going to fly one of those things (helicopters) one of these days.” However, 10 years later in 1973 upon graduation, at the age of 18, Donald Shorter father informed him that they could not afford flight school for him as he graduated from Lincoln High School in Tacoma, Washington, so he decided to pursue another passion broadcasting instead, and later landed a job at KOMO Television (Seattle, WA ABC Network Affiliate), as a television host of the program UP-FRONT as well as KJR, KYAC and KVI radio in Seattle, WA. After 40 years the dream that was initially sparked at the age of eight, ever so faintly still flickered at the age of 48, Shorter once again gave place to his life long dreams of aviation this time tied to ministry. Pastor Shorter now spends part of his time (when he is not Pastoring his congregations, which is his true calling), preaching a word of inspiration to students young and old that have dreams of their own. “I believe deep down inside every person is a dream, as Dr. King echoed around the world many years ago. I enjoy helping people to begin to live their dreams because I am truly living my dream in all areas of my life, and it is great!” Dr. Shorter encourages students to “read more, to achieve more”. “Whether it involves aviation, ministry or any other area in life, knowledge is power in today’s society.” Shorter said. Shorter is often stopped by aviation wantabees, looking for him to dish out inspiration and direction on how to become a pilot, especially after he lands his aircraft. “It’s a door opener. I let them know they can excel in anything they set their minds to do.” Shorter also said.
Donald Shorter is in the final stages of acquiring his Helicopter and Airplane Flight Instructor certificates to begin his Excel Academy and Aviation Training Center opening in Fall 2007 located in Tacoma, WA to inspire, direct, prepare, refer and monitor aspiring Helicopter and Jet Airplane flight students to pursue their dreams of aviation against all the odds. The aviation introduction center will be under the umbrella of Northco Development Inc. a non-profit corporation founded by Shorter and his wife which houses a number of community outreaches including Real Dads In America, Kathy’s Kids, and Excellence In Business. “It will be an institute of inspiration and direction and place to get started with developing a career out of the passion one has for aviation.” He said. A local Seattle businessman, Marshall Jones recently donated 30 computers for student use in Shorter’s aviation introduction to training school after hearing of the vision, other donations, assistance and gifts are constantly being received from individuals and business interested in helping future aviation students, including from Shorter’s former flight school, Spana-Flight in Puyallup, Washington, where Dr. Shorter received most of his initial flight training.
Donald and Kathy Shorter are also regular hosts on the Praise The Lord program on the Trinity Broadcasting Network and have been guests on DayStar network and other radio and television program. The Shorters also hosted on their own national television program. Pastor Donald Shorter ministers with his wife Kathy of nearly 33 years of marriage at Pacific Christian Center Church in Tacoma, Washington. The Shorters have 3 grown children and a Son-In-Law that are employed by the ministry and 2 granddaughters. Pacific Christian Center recently added the feature of its own helipad next to the sanctuary during the construction of their newly constructed nearly 10 acre, $7.5 million dollar facility. The church is located next to the Puyallup Highway 512, in Tacoma, at 3211 –112th Street East Tacoma, WA. Pastor Donald Shorter, D.Min., and his wife Kathy, speaks at hundreds of engagements each year, of which his corporate piloting abilities has helped immensely.
